A lizard (family Chamaeleonidae) which has protruding eyes that can move independently, and eyelids partly fused, leaving only a small central aperture. They are arboreal, most with a prehensile tail and all with opposable toes used for grasping tree branches, and feed mainly on insects which they catch with a sticky tongue that may be as long as the lizard itself. Many are able to change colour. There are about 180 species, found mainly in Africa, Madagascar, and southern Europe.
