A series of agreements negotiated at Évian-les-Bains in France. Secret negotiations between the government of General de Gaulle and representatives of the provisional government of the Algerian Republic of Ben Bella began in Switzerland in December 1961 and continued in March 1962 at Évian. A ceasefire commission was set up and the French government, subject to certain safeguards, agreed to the establishment of an independent Algeria following a referendum. The agreements were ratified by the French National Assembly but were violently attacked by the extremist Organization de l’Armée Secrète (OAS).
