A molecule that converts chemical energy into mechanical motion. An example is the chemical energy released by the hydrolysis of ATP and the resulting mechanical effects. There have been attempts to create molecular motors artificially. Although those so far created are not as efficient as naturally occurring molecular motors, the topic is currently a very active area of research.
