ESA astronaut and aerospace engineer who lived and worked on the International Space Station (ISS) during September 2015. This 10-day mission was Mogensen’s first space flight and the first ever by a Danish national. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 November 1976, Mogensen received a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London in 1999 and a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. He was selected as a European Space Agency astronaut in May 2009 and completed the astronaut basic training programme at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, in November 2010. Two years later Mogensen participated in the 2012 ESA CAVES training—a space-mission analogue, focusing on human behaviour and performance in extreme environments—living underground for a week and exploring a cave system in Sardinia. His historic flight to the ISS launched on 2 September 2015. During the mission, Mogensen worked as a flight engineer on both the ISS and the Soyuz TMA-18M during launch and on Soyuz TMA-16M during his return flight.
