A process that breaks down complex petroleum hydrocarbon molecules by the action of temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst. Zeolites and other minerals are used as the catalyst. Heavy oils can be converted into lighter products such as LPG. The process takes place in a catalytic cracker, which is often abbreviated to the name cat cracker.
