A search for asteroids and comets, particularly those passing close to Earth, undertaken with the 0.68-m Catalina Schmidt telescope of Steward Observatory on Mt Bigelow, Arizona, and the 1.5-m reflector at nearby Mount Lemmon Observatory. The Catalina Sky Survey began in 1992 under the name Bigelow Sky Survey, but changed to the current name in 1998. The Catalina Schmidt telescope was upgraded from 0.4-m to 0.68-m aperture in 2003. Follow-up observations are undertaken by a 1.0-m telescope at Mount Lemmon.
