An attendant of Vesta, goddess of fire, hearth, and home. The virgins numbered six, chosen by lot from a short list of aristocratic girls. Under vows of chastity they served for 30 years, dressed as brides, cleaning Vesta’s shrine and tending the fire. Unchaste Vestals were buried alive. They lived in the House of the Vestals in the Forum at Rome, and wills were deposited with them for safekeeping.
