Equipment that uses a dish antenna typically about 1 or 2 metres in diameter to establish a two-way link to a satellite in geostationary earth orbit. VSATs are designed to make it easy to communicate via satellite from remote locations. They support both the transmission of small chunks of data and high-capacity streaming, enabling Internet services and digital broadcasting to be made available worldwide. Stabilized VSATs with a moving platform that enables them to remain oriented at a fixed point in the sky are now widely used by ships at sea.
