A Germanic tribe that migrated from the Baltic coast in the 1st century bc. After taking Pannonia in the 4th century they were driven further west by the Huns. With the Suebi and Alemanni they crossed the Rhine into Gaul and Spain, where the name Andalusia (‘Vandalitia’) commemorates them. They were then ousted by the Goths. Taking ship to North Africa under Genseric, they set up an independent kingdom after the capture of Carthage. In 455 they returned to Italy and sacked Rome. Belisarius finally subjected them in 534.
