A monkey belonging to one of several Cebus species (family Cebidae), up to about 55 cm long with a partially prehensile tail of similar length. It lives in the canopy of American tropical forests and feeds mainly on fruit and insects. Capuchins, named by early European explorers who saw a resemblance to monks of the Capuchin order of Franciscan friars, have an elaborate social structure and are considered the most intelligent of New World monkeys.
