One of the many views of the role of individuals in the definition and explanation of social phenomena. Since social wholes are apparently made up of human beings and are caused by their actions, they can and should be explained in terms of the actions of individual human beings. In this view, for example, culture is thought to be represented by the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of individuals, rather than by group dynamics. L. Udehn (2001) attempts to cover everything of importance that has been written on methodological individualism.
