  • A series of weather satellites launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) into geostationary orbit 36 000 km above the coast of Africa, from where detailed images of weather systems are transmitted to ground stations. Meteosat 7 was launched in 1997. ESA's upgraded Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) was first launched in August 2002. The satellites are now operated by Eumetsat. The current operational weather satellites are Meteosat-8, -9, and -10; Metop-A and -B; Jason-2 and -3; and Sentinel-3A.


Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A series of several experimental and four operational meteorological satellites launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) and operated by Eumetsat on behalf of the ESA. The first was launched in 1972 by NASA and the fourth, Meteosat-7, in 1997 by the ESA. Four Meteosat Second Generation satellites were launched between 2002 and 2012 and will remain operational until 2020, when they will be succeeded by Meteosat Third Generation satellites. The first Third Generation satellite is scheduled for launch in 2021.
