A type of valve used to control the flow of a fluid in a pipeline; it has a circular body and a rotary motion disc closure member which is pivotally supported by its stem. There are various styles including eccentric and high-performance valves. They offer (p. 48) a low pressure drop and are suitable for dirty and viscous fluids, however, they are prone to inducing cavitation and choked flow.
