The alteration of primary igneous pyroxene to a fibrous mass of amphibole, usually hornblende, during late-stage hydrothermal activity, or during low-grade metamorphism of the igneous rock. The amphibole was originally thought to be a distinct mineral type known as ‘uralite’.
