A descendant, or a supporter of the descendants, of Edmund of Langley (1341–1402), fifth son of Edward III and (from 1385) 1st Duke of York. Adherents of his grandson Richard, 3rd Duke of York, adopted a white rose as their badge. Despite Richard’s death at the Battle of Wakefield (1460), his party was soon afterwards successful against the Lancastrians and his son Edward became king as Edward IV. The House of York continued on the throne with Edward V, and then with Edward IV’s younger brother, Richard III, until Henry VII began the Tudor dynasty after his victory at Bosworth Field in 1485. Henry prudently married the Yorkist heiress, Edward IV’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth of York.
