Describing a gene that is expressed continuously to provide the cell with products essential for its maintenance and basic functions. Such genes, also known as housekeeping genes, are normally expressed in all cells of the organism at a fairly constant level. The products—constitutive proteins—include numerous enzymes, structural proteins, signal proteins, and proteins involved in gene expression and protein synthesis.
