Any industry concerned with advanced technology, such as biotechnology, computers and microprocessors, fibre optics, aerospace, electronics-telecommunication, and pharmaceuticals (Fischer et al. (2005) Geog. Analys. 38, 3). In theory such industries are footloose, since the products have a high value to weight ratio. High-tech hubs in India are Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune (Crescenzi et al. Econ. Geog. 12, 5, 1055). Bernstein and Nadiri (1988) Am. Econ. Rev. 78 find that new technological knowledge complements R&D in high-technology industries. Florida (2002) J. Econ. Geog. 2 finds a significant, positive correlation between his ‘bohemian index’ and concentrations of high-tech industry. James (2008) Geog. Compass 3 has an interesting paper on the gendered geographies of high-tech economies.
