单词 meridian
释义
meridian

Physics
  • 1. See latitude and longitude.

    2. (magnetic meridian) An imaginary great circle on the earth’s surface that passes through the north and south magnetic poles. A compass needle on the earth’s surface influenced only by the earth’s magnetic field (see geomagnetism) comes to rest along a magnetic meridian.

    3. (celestial meridian) A great circle of the celestial sphere that passes through the zenith and the celestial poles. It meets the horizon at the north and south points.

Mathematics
  • A great circle on the Earth, assumed to be a sphere, through the north and south poles or such a semi-circle between poles. More generally, a meridian on a surface of revolution is a copy of the generating curve that has been rotated through some fixed angle. The meridians are then normal to the latitudes.

Geography
  • An imaginary circle along the world’s surface from geographic pole to geographic pole; a line of longitude. Meridians are described by the angle they form west or east of the prime meridian, which has a value of 0° and runs through Greenwich, England.
