A single model of the atomic nucleus that combines the shell model with the liquid-drop model; i.e. the single-particle and collective aspect of nuclei. It is necessary to use the unified model to calculate the quadruple moment of a nonspherical nucleus and to get a fully quantitative description of nuclear fission.
