单词 British Interplanetary Society
释义
British Interplanetary Society

Space Exploration
  • A British space organization established in 1933 with charitable status. The society, located in London, calls itself ‘the world's longest established organization devoted solely to supporting and promoting the exploration of space and astronautics’. The society publishes Spaceflight magazine and, since 2004, Voyage magazine for students aged 10–14.

It has worldwide membership and is noted for its visionary concepts. In 1948, one of its study groups envisioned a delta-winged reusable space orbiter, and it was at a BIS meeting in August 1968 that George Mueller, the associate administrator for Manned Space Flight at NASA, publicly revealed plans for an orbiter ‘shuttling between Earth and the installations which will be operating in space’.
