A process once used for refining light oil produced from the carbonization of coal. The oil is first washed with sulphuric acid before adding water. The resulting mixture of resins passes into the oil phase. The dilute sulphuric acid was then used to make ammonium sulphate. The process, named after its German inventor A. Ufer, was used in the 1920s and 1930s.
