Matheron was a graduate of the École Polytechnique and the École des Mines de Paris, where his PhD was supervised by Lévy. From 1954 to 1963 he worked for the French Geological Survey in Algeria and France, and then, after a period at the Nancy School of Mines, he returned in 1968 to the École des Mines. By 1986 this had been reorganized and Matheron was Director of the Centre de Géostatistique. In 1962, in his Traité de Géostatistique Appliquée, Matheron set out the fundamentals of geostatistics, including the optimal spatial interpolation procedure that he called kriging. He was created an Honorary Fellow of the RSS in 1988.
