A nerve toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which can cause fatal food poisoning. It is the most toxic natural substance known. In minute doses it is used to treat certain conditions involving muscle dysfunction, and in cosmetic medicine ‘Botox’ treatment is used to reduce skin wrinkles and other signs of ageing.
