A long metal beam extending from a spacecraft and serving as a structure subsystem. The Voyager spacecraft, for example, had a boom appendage to mount its sensitive magnetometer 6–13 m from the spacecraft's electric currents. The boom is collapsed into a protective canister for the launch and then deployed in flight.
