He lost his estates at the Restoration in 1660 and hoped to persuade the authorities to return them by his attack on Dublin castle in 1663. His most famous exploit was the theft of the English crown jewels from the Tower of London in 1671. Charles II, who examined Blood personally after his arrest, was so impressed with his audacity that he was pardoned and his estates restored.
