(died c.1352 bc) Pharaoh of Egypt (c.1361–1352 bc). Little is known about his reign; his importance is largely that his tomb in the Valley of the Kings escaped looting in antiquity. Hidden by rubble from the construction of a later tomb, it was found almost intact by the British archaeologist Howard Carter and his patron, Lord Carnarvon, in 1922. Tutankhamun’s mummified body was inside three coffins, the inner one of solid gold; over his face was a magnificent gold funerary mask, and the burial chamber housed a unique collection of jewellery and weapons.
