A bottom-dwelling, left-eyed flatfish (family Scophthalmidae), up to 1 m long, found in shallow, sandy, salt, and brackish water in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic, and Black Seas. There are four genera with nine species, including the best-known turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, which is highly prized for food.
