A governor appointed to protect vulnerable areas known as marks in the Holy Roman Empire. They were the equivalent of English marches (marcher lord) and were usually frontier territories. Charlemagne introduced this office, which in the 12th century became hereditary, and the title came to rank equally with a prince of the empire.
