Localized, hot, buoyant material which is hypothesized to be rising through the mantle. Mantle plumes are thought by some geologists to rise beneath hot spots, causing domal uplift. Plumes may originate near the mantle–core boundary, and it has been suggested that they generally have the form of a cylinder with a radius of about 150 km.
