Mantel graduated from the City College (now City U) of New York in 1939. From 1947 to 1974 he worked at the National Cancer Institute, where Haenszel was a colleague. Mantel was co-author (with Haenszel) of the 1959 paper which introduced the eponymous Mantel–Haenszel test of independence. He held research professorships at GWU (1974–82) and the American U in Washington (1982–2002). He was made an Honorary Fellow of the RSS in 1992.
