A coarse-grained, igneous rock consisting of essential magnesium-rich olivine and calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar with accessory ilmenite; i.e. it is gabbro without the pyroxene component. Troctolites grade into gabbros by a gradual increase in pyroxene content and a gradual decrease in olivine content.
