A distribution having two modes. A distribution with two or more modes is called multimodal; one with a single mode is called unimodal.
Bimodal distribution. The distribution illustrated is a mixture of two normal distributions.
A distribution of data characterized by two distinct populations. For example, a bimodal grain size will be characterized by two particle size modes. A bimodal palaeocurrent distribution will exhibit two main current directions (not necessarily opposing directions, which would be termed a ‘bipolar’ distribution).
A distribution with two distinct peaks and a dip between them. An example is the empirical distribution of human death rates, which are higher in infancy and in old age than in the years between.
