One of the last US components added to the International Space Station. The 18 000-kg node, which measures 6.7 metres long and 4.2 metres wide, was built by Thales Alenia in Italy under contract to the ESA. Launched on 8 February 2010 aboard the space shuttle Endeavour’s STS-130 mission, the Tranquility module was attached to the port side of the Unity module to provide docking ports. The pressurized section also furnishes additional room for crew members, as well as many critical life support and environmental control systems, among other accommodations.
