Author of the influential Principles of Geology, 12 editions of which were published between 1830 and 1875. He was an extreme uniformitarian, emphasizing a great age for the Earth. He thus influenced Darwin by allowing the time needed for evolutionary changes to occur. See uniformitarianism; drift.
