The concept of belonging is intimately tied to place, as any understanding of community and affinity with specific landscapes (place-making) simultaneously constructs a sense of socially recognized membership (Trudeau (2006) Cult. Geogs 13). Belonging captures ‘the desire for some sort of attachment, be it to other people, places, or modes of being, and ways in which individuals and groups are caught within wanting to belong, wanting to become’ (Probyn1996, quoted in Nelson and Hiemstra (2008) Soc. & Cult. Geog. 9, 3).
