US company whose space work included development of the lunar landing research vehicle (LLRV) and the ascent engine for the lunar module (LM). The LLRV was used to train Apollo astronauts to fly the LM. Bell also produced the Bell XS-1 experimental aircraft (later known as the X-1), the first to fly faster than the speed of sound, and the engine for the Gemini-Agena Target Vehicle (GATV) used for the 1966 rendezvous of Gemini 10 with an Agena target. The company, with headquarters in Buffalo, New York, later became a division of Textron Inc, of Providence, Rhode Island.
