An insect belonging to the largest insect order (Coleoptera), with more than 370,000 known species. Beetles have a hard exterior, the upper side protected by the hardened forewings (often coloured elytra) that flying species raise to expose the hindwings. They do not occur in the sea or in polar regions, but with those exceptions beetles are found everywhere.
