A flying insect related to ants and wasps (order Hymenoptera) and belonging to one of between seven and nine families, depending on the classification. Bees feed on pollen and nectar, in obtaining which they pollinate flowering plants. Many bees are social. About 20,000 species are known; bees occur worldwide, wherever there are flowering plants.
