An entity consisting of all possible universes, of which our universe is one example. The multiple universes possibly correspond to different possible vacuum states in superstring theory. In the different universes of the multiverse it is possible for there to be different laws of physics or different numbers of space–time dimensions. Some interpretations of the multiverse tie it in with the anthropic principle and/or the many-worlds interpretation.

Astronomy

A collection of universes which some speculative theories suggest could exist. If true, our own Universe would be only one member of the larger multiverse. If these different universes had values of the fundamental constants that are different from those in our own Universe, this might explain why our Universe appears so well-suited for the existence of life (see anthropic principle).
