A conference of Asian and African states at Bandung in Java, Indonesia. Organized on the initiative of President Sukarno and other leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Bandung Conference brought together twenty-nine states in an attempt to form a non-aligned bloc opposed to colonialism and the ‘imperialism’ of the superpowers. The five principles of non-aggression, respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, equality, and peaceful co-existence were adopted, but the subsequent emergence of the non-aligned movement was hamstrung by the deterioration of relations between India and China, and by the conflicting forces set loose by decolonization.
