A large marine crustacean (family Nephropidae) that has a long body, a strong tail, prominent antennae, and five pairs of legs of which three bear claws, those of the first pair being very large. Lobsters are omnivores that live in burrows or crevices on the seafloor of all oceans. There are many species, several of which are commercially important, including the American (Homarus americanus) and European (H. gammarus) lobsters and scampo (Nephrops norvegicus).
