United States non-banking financial institutions which collect savings from the public and finance mortgages. A thrift (a term used interchangeably with savings and loan association) is the nearest US equivalent to a UK building society. Many thrifts ran into severe financial problems in the 1980s, and had to be rescued with US government money.
