单词 axis
释义
axis

Physics
  • 1. One of a set of reference lines used to locate points on a graph or in a coordinate system. See Cartesian coordinates; polar coordinates.

    2. A line about which a figure, curve, or body is symmetrical (axis of symmetry) or about which it rotates (axis of rotation).

Mathematics
  • See coordinates.

Science and Technology
  • 1. (of symmetry) A line drawn through a two-dimensional object such that the shapes on either side are identical.

    2. (of rotation) The straight line about which a rotating body turns. For example, the Earth rotates about an axis drawn through its centre from the geographic North to South Poles.

    3. In mathematics, lines used in a Cartesian coordinate system against which any point in the system may be uniquely located.

Chemical Engineering
  • 1. A fixed reference point or line about which a graph or figure is plotted.

    2. A line about which a body rotates such as an impeller in a centrifugal pump.

Biology
  • The second cervical vertebra, which articulates with the atlas (the first cervical vertebra, which articulates with the skull). The articulation between the axis and atlas in reptiles, birds, and mammals permits side-to-side movement of the head. The body of the axis is elongated to form a peg (the odontoid process), which extends into the ring of the atlas and acts as a pivot on which the atlas (and skull) can turn.
