The most social of the large cats (family Felidae), which lives in a family group (pride) consisting of usually about six but sometimes more related females with their offspring and one or two males. Some prides permanently occupy an area; others are nomadic within a range. Males are larger than females and recognizable by their large manes. Lions are carnivores, but readily eat carrion, and the females hunt collaboratively while the males guard the cubs. Lions currently occur in sub-Saharan Africa and India.
