The collective name for a number of radio antennas located at four observatories in Australia, owned and operated by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The antennas can be used individually, or in various combinations as a long-baseline interferometer. The heart of the ATNF is the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at the Paul Wild Observatory, Narrabri, New South Wales, consisting of six dishes, 22 m in diameter, in a line 6 km long. The largest individual instrument is the 64-m dish at Parkes Observatory, NSW, 300 km to the south of the Compact Array. Between these two sites lies another 22-m dish at Mopra Observatory, near the town of Coonabarabran, NSW. When completed, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) in Western Australia will become part of the ATNF. The ATNF began operation in 1988. Its headquarters are in Epping, NSW.
