A periodic comet, discovered independently in 1865 December by the German astronomer (Ernst) Wilhelm (Leberecht) Tempel (1821–89) and in 1866 January by the American astronomer Horace Parnell Tuttle (1837–1923). The comet’s orbital period is close to 33 years, and past apparitions back to ad 1366 have been identified. Comet Tempel–Tuttle is notable as the parent of the Leonid meteor stream, from which outbursts of high activity are sometimes seen when the comet returns to the inner Solar System. The comet’s orbit has a perihelion of 0.98 au, eccentricity 0.91, and inclination 162°.5.
