An aperture synthesis radio telescope consisting of 36 dishes, each of 12 m diameter with baselines up to 6 km, being built at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in Western Australia. The first six dishes began operation in 2013. When complete, the array will become part of the Australia Telescope National Facility. As well as being a major instrument in its own right, ASKAP will serve as a testbed for the Square Kilometre Array.
