A committee formed in 1990 by the National Space Council to advise on the future of the US space programme. Norman Augustine, chair and chief executive of the Martin Marietta Corporation (later merged with Lockheed to form Lockheed Martin), headed the 12-member committee. Its report, released in December 1990, recommended an increase in satellites and space probes for scientific purposes, including environmental research. It did not encourage crewed missions to the Moon or Mars, advising NASA to concentrate on the space shuttle and space station programmes.
