Techniques to transform audio signals into digital form while finding a suitable trade-off between reducing the number of bits needed to represent the signal and maintaining the resulting sound quality. Some techniques, commonly used in consumer mobile or Internet-enabled audio devices, use lossy compression, as the size of the data is often the limiting factor. Advanced lossy techniques use the results of research into inaudible parts of audio signals in order to try to remove only that information.
