Roman emperor in the East (379–94) and sole emperor (394–95). The son of a famous general, Count Theodosius, Gratian appointed him co‐emperor in 378. After failing to defeat the Goths he formed a treaty with them in 382. He was a champion of strict political and religious orthodoxy. His two sons, Arcadius and Honorius, succeeded him.
